Along the Métis Trail

Métis History, Heritage, and Culture

by the best selling authors George Goulet and Terry Goulet

Along the Métis Trail: Métis History, Heritage, and Culture is a book that provides a vivid up-to-date portrayal of the fabulous history, heritage, and culture of the Métis People from the late 1700s to 2022.

This book provides factual information on the Métis People that the authors have assembled during more than a quarter of a century of extensive research on the Métis People of Canada and Louis Riel.

The authors of this book, George and Terry Goulet, are active advocates of the rights and equality for all Métis People. Examples of their extensive literary works include the books The Trial of Louis Riel: Justice and Mercy Denied; The Métis: Memorable Events & Memorable Personalities; and The Métis in British Columbia: From Fur Trade Outposts to Colony.

In 1816 the Métis were first recognized as a new Canadian Indigenous nation. The Métis played an important role in the early exploration and development of western Canada.

The historical Métis in the fur trade intermarried with native women. The Indigenous Métis offspring from these unions inherited cultural and other traits from both their Indian (First Nations) and European ancestors. This new Nation of Métis had their own distinctiveness and their own Indigenous identity.

Their history is replete with remarkable personalities and with memorable events such as the Battle of Seven Oaks, the Sayer Trial over free trade, the Red River Resistance, the North West Uprising, the Manitoba Métis Federation Inc. Case, the Daniels Case as well as other events and court cases.

Library and Archives Canada has catalogued for publication Along the Métis Trail: Métis History, Heritage, and Culture. Using its Library of Congress Subject Headings System, Library and Archives Canada has designated the following Canadiana Subject Headings to this book:

LCSH: Métis. | LCSH: Métis—History. | LCSH: Métis— Social life and customs. | LCSH: Métis—Legal status, laws, etc.

On April 17, 1982 Canada’s Constitution was patriated under the Canadian Constitution Act, 1982. For the first time, the Métis were officially recognized as an Aboriginal (also known as Indigenous) rights-bearing People. The Charter of Rights and Freedoms and section 35 thereof together with other sections of the Canadian Constitution Act, 1982 provide the Métis with the framework for their individual and organizational Indigenous rights and fundamental freedoms.

Along the Métis Trail: Métis History, Heritage, and Culture provides information on the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Constitution Act, 1982 that the Métis People can utilize as a moral compass to guide them along the Métis Trail to reconciliation.

As an introduction to Metis history, or for those intent on finding out more about the origins of our people, this book is recommended.” – From a book review by Virginia Barter in Métis Voyageur (Fall, 2007)

“The Métis – Memorable Events and Memorable Personalities” covers a full range of Métis history; until now, some of these persons and events have not been widely known. The book is accessible to all.
